Serendipities

In my last post, I talked about trying to find what my role is. I ordered Lissa Rankin’s book, and have to admit that the book made me think of one I read a few years ago now It’s the thought that counts by David Hamilton.

I had the pleasure of actually meeting Dr Hamilton when I lived in Edinburgh, and back then, I was as passionate about the mind/body connection as I am now. He was a generous man who took the time to chat to me on the phone about these beliefs and I finished the call with him feeling inspired and fired up to move myself into the realm of mind/body medicine.

Fast forward 6 years or so, and I am returning from a u-turn. Not long after that call with Dr Hamilton, I returned to my hometown of Glasgow with the intention of embarking on a round the world trip learning about ancient healing techniques. I had been applying for funding, and as chance would have it, The Winston Churchill Memorial fund believed enough in the project to send me £500 towards it.

My “I’m not good enough” kicked in so hard that it sent me back into University to study an MSc in Clinical Pharmacy. While I did jump at an opportunity to visit Thailand to learn about the traditional medicine used in community hospitals out there, I have to admit, my MSc was a u-turn.

I completed my project, ‘A study of alternative medicine use within surgical patients’ feeling deflated and uninspired. I retreated into a safe job, with secure money and wished I’d had the guts to say no to the project i was offered, and actually wait until a title I believed in had come along.

Here I am, a few years later, still in that safe job, (although I have now trained in hypnotherapy) and once again wondering where I’m going with mind/body medicine. I ordered Dr Hamilton’s latest book How Your Mind Can Heal Your Body after he crossed my mind at the weekend. I haven’t read it yet but the very next day, I discovered that he is coming to Glasgow to speak at a conference.

There was part of me wondering if there was any point going, I’ve been to these things before and although I’ve come away inspired, nothing really changes. And then I stumbled across an ezine article by Lisa Fitzpatrick entitled, “Refusal of the call” and it made me take notice. I’ve now bought my ticket for that conference. If nothing else, it gives me the opportunity to be in the same room with people that believe the same thing I do. We’ll see what else happens from there.

What about you? Have you had any serendipities happen when you’ve made a choice to move towards something? I’d love to hear about it.
